Abstract: This contribution discusses Amartya Sen’s capability approach as a heuristic tool for the analysis of specific forms of cooperative economic initiatives. It rejects an individualistic interpretation of the approach and emphasizes the role of collectives and social relations in the conception of capabilities. Using the example of two complementary currency schemes, both initiated by a public service cooperative, it is shown how such collective schemes might expand both individual and collective capabilities.
