Abstract: Housing cooperatives rely heavily on the commitment of members, in particular their motivation to act as board or committee members and to participate in joint activities of the housing community. The example of housing cooperatives in Switzerland examines which factors can explain differences in the individual willingness to volunteer. The study is based on a member value approach, which explains members’ engagement with the organization’s ability to fulfill of a wide range of needs beyond pure economic benefits and returns. Survey data from 32 cooperatives and 1263 members are analyzed using a multi-level model. The results support the importance of two key member value dimensions: social cohesion and individual effectiveness. This can explain significant differences in membership involvement beyond already known factors (age, education level). At the organizational level, the study also shows that a higher age of an organization, but not the degree of professionalization nor the size, is associated with a below-average commitment of members.
