Abstract: Apart from individual disciplines’ perspectives on the subject, the German-speaking countries have seen the development of cooperative studies as a discipline unto its own, focused on cooperatives’ specific problems concerning business administration and management. This article highlights how Ernst Grünfeld and above all Karl Hildebrand pioneered the research on cooperatives in this regard, as part of their work at the Department for Cooperative Studies in Halle as early as the 1920 s. Their seminal and still prevailing work includes the outline of a practice-oriented cooperative research program as well as concrete contributions in that vein.
