Abstract: In the discourse of social policy in Germany the contribution of ‘senior cooperatives’ to the participation of elderly people in society is often mentioned. This paper tries to clarify how far this can be observed in reality. After an analysis of empirical data of a student’s master project the paper concludes that the contribution of these associations takes place especially on the level of personal integration for elderly people in the specific community of an association. Concerning integration on the socio-structural level into the sourrounding society these associations contribute to an integration only in a limited way.
