Vadim Radaev
Voprosy Ekonomiki, 2002, vol. 1
Abstract:
nbsp; Russian business is still largely involved into shadow economy. At the same time a vital necessity of legalization of economic activities is widely discussed among business owners and top managers. The problem is that the costs of legalization are too prohibitive. The paper is focused on the ways how to establish conventions among businesses and public officials aimed to develop more transparent relationships. The study is based on data coming from a set of in-depth interviews. The survey was conducted with the owners and top managers of 14 Russian companies dealing with the imported durable goods in 2001. All companies were members of the Association of trade and production companies in electronic and computer goods (RATEC). Comparative costs of different business strategies are estimated with the special attention to custom duties.
