Abstract: This work analyzes the impact of the migration of parents on the probability that children between 10 to 14 years of age in São Paulo state are working or studying. On the basis of a family category established in accordance with the combinations of mother’s and father’s migration conditions, we estimate a bivariate probit for boys and girls. The differences between the probabilities found and decomposed by the Oaxaca method show that the children of recent migrant couples are more likely to work, due to the disadvantage of their parents in the job market. In the case of children of single parent families, children of migrant mothers are more likely to work than children of non-migrant mothers.
