Abstract: The paper presents evidence that the popular concept of institutional transfers between metropolis and colonies, derived from Douglass North's theories, are not always true. For this purpose, we made use of documents elaborated during the periods of Spanish, Portuguese, and Dutch rule in Brazil and Argentina to show that, in spite of the diversity of metropolises, the colonies ended up building similar institutions.
