Opportunity Inequality of Property Income Distribution: Measurement, Decomposition, and Comparison

Xiaodong Chen and Miraj Ahmed Bhuiyan

Review of Behavioral Economics, 2023, vol. 10, issue 2, 77-103

Abstract: This paper measures the degree of opportunity inequality of property income distribution of Chinese residents by using the method of censored regression and calculates the contribution share of different environmental factors in the opportunity inequality of property income distribution. Using the method of Shapley value decomposition, the results show that: the degree of opportunity inequality of property income distribution accounts for about 1/3 to 1/4 of the total property income inequality, which is higher than that of the wage income distribution. In addition, the opportunity inequality of property income distribution of residents in China has prominent gender and age differences, while regional differences are not noticeable. This study provides certain theoretical support and a factual basis for promoting the policy implementation of the goal of shared prosperity.
