Box C: Mind the Regional Transport Connectivity Gap

Larissa da Silva Marioni ()

National Institute UK Economic Outlook, 2025, issue 17, 55-62

Abstract: Infrastructure services are crucial for driving economic growth and improving overall quality of life. In particular, better transport connectivity improves access to employment, essential services and leisure activities. Strengthening the transport network directly contributes to economic growth by increasing productivity through improved connectivity, optimising the labour market by matching workers with suitable jobs, and broadening job opportunities by allowing workers to find positions that better match their skills. Moreover, enhanced connectivity attracts investments by making regions more accessible and attractive to businesses, which in turn stimulates competition, fosters agglomeration economies, and promotes regional development (Gramlich, 1994; Venables, 2007; Graham, 2007). Transport connectivity is also key to ensuring equitable access to opportunities. Despite the rise of hybrid work and digital connectivity, physical transport remains crucial for social resilience, particularly as commuting patterns evolve (Lee, 2023). Additionally, it helps mitigate disruptions during crises by ensuring access to essential goods and services.
