Abstract: On 25 September 2012, Alan Bollard completed his second five-year term as Governor and Chief Executive of the Reserve Bank. Dr Bollard was appointed to the role in 2002 following four years as Secretary to the Treasury. Prior to that, he was Chairman of the New Zealand Commerce Commission from 1994 and Director of the New Zealand Institute of Economic Research for seven years. By any standards his tenure has been eventful, covering the latter half of one of the largest booms in New Zealand’s post-war history, and subsequently the Global Financial Crisis and its aftermath, here and abroad. In this interview, undertaken in early August, Alan reflects on his time with the Reserve Bank, especially the policy challenges, relationships, and changes in the regulatory framework.
