Economic Liberalization and Carbon Emission: A Case Study of Cement Industry in India

Abstract: Cement plays an important role in infrastructure developments and socioeconomic growth of a country. But, a lot of Carbon Dioxide is emitted from the use of fossil fuel for ignition of kilns during calcination of clinkers. Carbon Dioxide is one of the greenhouse gases responsible for global warming. The production of cement is estimated to increase at the rate of 5.2 percent annually, and is likely to reach a level of 251.82 million tons by the year 2015. In the process 127.85 million metric tons of Carbon Dioxide is likely to be released in the atmosphere. The reduction Carbon Dioxide of emission can be achieved by burning less of fossil fuel and replacing them with alternate sources of energy such as natural gas, biomass, renewable energy, atomic energy etc.
