Abstract:
Recent developments in Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Czech Republic, East Germany, Poland, Romania, Russia, South Africa, Ukraine, USA and a number of other countries indicate an increasing role of industrialized agriculture with large organizational units. The International Competence Center on Large Scale Agriculture (LaScalA) brings together the network of international researchers in the sphere of large scale farming. In particular, LaScalA enables the systemization of theoretical and empirical research, serves as a forum for exchange of relevant research ideas and results as well as offers an interactive online platform that collects all publicly available information about large farm operations from around the world. The scientific objective of LaScalA is to enhance and contribute to the research and knowledge of the ongoing and potential socio-economic impacts of large scale farming. More specifically, the project aims to investigate the organizational and ethical aspects of large scale agriculture as well as institutional frameworks that enable persistence of large agricultural enterprises. The project fills important gaps in understanding the effects of large scale agricultural businesses on economic and social performance of the sector, welfare and distributional justice in rural areas, competition in factor and output markets. LaScalA is the project funded by the Leibniz Association (Germany) and realized by the Leibniz Institute of Agricultural Development in Transition Economies (IAMO, Halle, Germany).
