Abstract: The economic crisis of the 1970s and the so-called “Chicago revolution” of the 1980s was a great challenge to Samuelson’s anti-laissez faire legacy, but left its heavy reliance on mathematics and modelling intact. The “Great Recession” that began in 2008 may ultimately replenish Samuelson’s dirigiste outlook, but allow for a less mathematical, more pluralist methodology.
