Abstract: This paper is focused on the evolution of economic and social situation in Romania in 1990-2007, and after that it is focalized upon possible paths to follow in order to provide a sustainable development in this geographical area, taking account of the way Romanian society and the political leadership could use the huge potential given by Danube river in order to attain this objective.
