Abstract: In this paper, similarities and differences among the EU member states in the last years are evaluated by using an array of variables, each of which representing an aspect of the knowledge economy. In the first section of the work, a brief overview of the economic development theory is provided and its relationship with knowledge diffusion is underlined. In the second section, some indicators as proxies of knowledge diffusion are introduced and the performances of the above mentioned countries are investigated by means of a multidimensional scaling analysis. Results show that it is possible to distinguish homogeneous clusters of European countries having in common geographic elements and knowledge capability.
