Abstract: One of the frequent questions asked about alcoholism is that if it is hereditary or not. Up until now the performed studies showed that it is not hereditary in the actual meaning of the word. This study is meant to analyze the possibility of a connection between the length of abstinence or the relapse during rehabilitation of an abstinent alcoholic, and the existence of relatives with similar problems. The studied group was made up of 112 men, abstinent alcoholics, and the results suggested that in the case of abstinent alcoholics who did or didn’t have first or second degree relatives with similar problems, this very fact doesn’t influence their success in maintaining abstinence on long term, nor the fact that they had relapses or not. On the other hand, in the case in which the period of time from the last relapse was registered, those who presented an abstinence of over five years and those with an abstinence up to five years present some differences regarding the existence of some relatives with similar addiction problems.
