Transnational Corporations Review, 2013, vol. 5, issue 2, 60-76

Abstract: The purpose of this paper is to address the significance of tourism to the regional economic development of Southeast Asian economies. The assessment is accomplished by examining the nature of tourism development and by identifying the problems of the tourism industry that exist in Southeast Asia. This paper also explores strategies required to develop tourism collectively in order to achieve gains through establishing favorable environment and mobilizing endowed strategic resources. The assessment suggests the need to give attention on formulating transparent objectives. It also needs implementation and integration of these objectives into national plans, participation of community people, tourism entrepreneurship and co-operation and integration of governments in developing tourism. Successfully overcoming difficulties of the regional tourism development, Southeast Asian tourism industry has potential to reap benefit from economies of scale.
