The export of Germany’s “secret of success†dual technical VET: MNCs and multiscalar stakeholders changing the skill formation system in Mexico

Abstract: Technical dual vocational education and training (VET) is deemed to be one of Germany’s export hits. The study explains how dual VET is transforming the skill formation system in Mexico. The study is based on qualitative studies in metropolitan regions of the Mexican central highland. Results show the Mexican skill formation system under transformation by providing companies with intermediary skilled workers, and thus Mexico’s change towards more knowledge-based production. The study contributes to closing a research gap on skills in manufacturing, which are relevant in practice, but still under-researched in regional studies and economic geography.
