Area variations in household income across Great Britain

Richard Berthoud ()

Cambridge Journal of Regions, Economy and Society, 2007, vol. 1, issue 1, 37-49

Abstract: Researchers and policy makers have long been interested in the spatial distribution of income. But we lack a balanced assessment of the extent to which the national pattern of inequality is attributable to variation between areas, or whether, on the contrary, there is wide variation between households within areas. One difficulty has been a lack of area-based incomes data. This paper uses an under-exploited source to undertake this decomposition at a series of levels of geographical aggregation. The concluding section considers whether the area variations identified are large or small--is the glass half full, or half empty? Copyright 2007, Oxford University Press.
