Abstract:
The appropriate use of biomass to fuel part of our future can help reduce the degree of global warming as biomass can be carbon neutral and can provide a sustainable source of energy. The general application of ‘woody’ biomass fuel for UK homes and small commercial applications is reviewed in this paper. This considers the prevailing biomass sources, their means of production, onsite storage requirements, relative energy costs and emissions resulting from combustion. It concludes that the greatest benefit will only be achieved if biomass systems are evaluated at the early stages of the design process. Copyright , Manchester University Press.
