The Oklahoma City Stockyards: Planning for the Future

Conrad Lyford and George Hall

Review of Agricultural Economics, 1999, vol. 21, issue 1, 266-275

Abstract: The Oklahoma City stockyards are the largest stocker-feeder public market in the world. Trends in how cattle are marketed indicate long-term declining prospects. This case presents a history and strategic prospects for the Stockyards. It also illustrates the changing nature of cattle marketing, competition, and vertical coordination. An opportunity to apply strategic decision making is provided.
