Using Active Learning to Enhance Lectures

Abstract: Eighty percent of college professors lecture more than 80% of the time. Since clarity of information is crucial to rigorous disciplines such as agricultural economics, this research-based article will examine ways in which student comprehension of lectures can be improved through the use of active learning. Specific strategies are suggested for previewing material, organizing information, assessing student learning, signaling transitions, using multiple examples, stressing, important points, providing pauses, eliminating unexplained content, and reviewing information frequently.
