Fresh Produce Procurement Strategies in a Constrained Supply Environment: Case Study of Companhia Brasileira de Distribuição

Denise Y. Mainville and H. Christopher Peterson

Review of Agricultural Economics, 2005, vol. 27, issue 1, 130-138

Abstract: Companhia Brasileira de Distribuição is Brazil's largest retailer. Fresh produce is both a profitable and strategically key sector for the firm; however they have trouble obtaining adequate supplies of fresh produce to meet their merchandising needs. This case study addresses their fresh produce procurement strategy. Following an introduction to the firm and the market environment, their specific procurement challenges are explored. The case concludes with a discussion of the strategic decision that the firm recently faced regarding its procurement strategy. Discussion questions encourage critical analysis of the case by students.
