Abstract:
The EC Biotechnology Action Programme (BAP), 1985–89, supported some 363 fellows to receive “training in research through research” for an average of 15 months in another Member State. In addition, over 400 people were employed on short-term contracts as researchers. These two groups were compared in terms of their prior characteristics, immediate attainments and current situations. Among the findings were that the national distribution was “cohesion-friendly” and favoured the less-favoured Member States, and over 30% of the employees and more than 20% of the fellows gained doctorates. In 1991–92, almost half the fellows and employees were still active in biotechnology research and publishing papers (one in four multi-national), almost half in higher education institutions.
