Adaptation of some former research units to the new economic environment in Russia

Abstract:
The economic and social changes in Russia since 1992 have had a significant effect on the former research units. A recent survey showed that these units have to radically rethink their mode of operation in order to survive. Introducing the concept of ‘enterprisation’ by which the former research units use their inherited assets and become more like firms, this article investigates the ways in which this has taken place. Many former institute have adapted by introducing manufacturing capacity, or offering consultancy. In some cases individuals have taken the initiative and built on the expertise of the staff to create profitable sidelines. Spin-off companies have also been formed.
