A model of science and technology relationships

Abstract:
The problem of identifying the boundaries between science and technology is addressed. By means of the two concepts of generality and appropriability of the information content of a research project, a model is constructed that highlights some peculiarities of the science-technology partition. It is then possible to analyse both the institutional and policy implications, from which some clear indications, such as context dependence, national identity and self-reliance, emerge. Moreover, it is shown how technology policies (and in particular patents) may, in certain cases, affect rather than improve the techno-economic performance of an economy.
