Development of transgenic Bt cotton technology in India and China: a policy perspective

Abstract:
The textile and apparel industries in India and China are a mainstay of the national economies. In China, the production of raw material, such as transgenic Bt cotton, and equipment, such as state of art manufacturing capabilities for the textile industry, has been promoted vigorously. In India, the government priorities concentrate on transfer of technology and automation of the sector “to build world class state-of-the-art manufacturing capabilities”. Thus policy seeks to strengthen the raw material base but appears reluctant to promote new technology to increase yield and production of cotton. India's priority should be to develop R&D of transgenic cotton technology that could bring a dramatic increase in yield and minimize the hazards of using pesticides.
