Abstract: Survey data collected in Romania in 1991 describe emerging patterns of landholding and farming where the majority of rural households pool land and produce collectively in newly formed associations, rather than farm individually. This pattern appears to persist in 1992 and 1993. The decision to farm collectively can be explained, in part, by households' response to slowly developing competitive markets. Nonetheless, the associations appear less responsive than private farmers to market stimuli, which may impede agricultural transformation.
