Abstract: Hilkka Pietil&aauml; demonstrates how the Finnish welfare state, built on sound principles of social equity, produces economic growth and promotes social justice. She warns that even in the Nordic states this successful way to ensure social development is under threat from neo-liberal globalization and proposes a global social contract to counteract the negative impact of current economic and trade policies.
