Abstract:
Carla Bakboord argues that domestic violence is now almost unanimously considered to be a crime in the Caribbean and is a priority on the agenda of governments and non-governmental organizations. In some countries there is a lack of legislation, lack of government policy towards this problem, great inequality within gender relations and a lack of knowledge and skills among stakeholders and beneficiaries and inadequate support systems to address these problems. In Suriname (South America) the first steps towards the development of strategies have been taken to curb domestic violence. Development (2001) 44, 59–63. doi:10.1057/palgrave.development.1110263
