Abstract: Libia Grueso and Leyla Andrea Arroyo examine the aims and problems facing black women organizing and mobilizing within the wider context of the Black Communities movement of the Colombian Pacific. Women engage, as part of the community, in a defence of their territory and of their ethnic-cultural identity. At the same time they create avenues to increase their access to the public spaces of organizing and decision-making, thus addressing issues of gender inequality within the community. In the process they attempt to develop strategies to simultaneously achieve their goals as women (mothers, caretakers, wives) and as leaders of the black community.
