Abstract: Sascha Müller-Kraenner argues that sustainable development, 10 years later, can only be understood and pursued in the new context of the globalization debate. Since September 11th, a double nexus between the sustainability and globalization debates as well as the international security architecture has developed. The last decade has also experienced a ‘stakeholder revolution’ in international affairs. International negotiations processes cannot continue to marginalize stakeholders, and a proper role for non-governmental actors in international relations must be defined. Johannesburg should result both in a concrete plan of action and ‘type 2 agreements’ between governments and multiple stakeholders. She proposes that improved governance structures are key for the sustainable development agenda to move forward. Development (2002) 45, 18–23. doi:10.1057/palgrave.development.1110372
