Struggles from Within: Migrant women in Southeast Asia

Mary Rose Geraldine A Sarausad

Development, 2006, vol. 49, issue 1, 134-136

Abstract: Mary Rose Geraldine aims to draw out the parallel experiences of migrant women Filipina and Burmese domestic workers, in Bangkok, Thailand. She looks at the contradictory effects of migration in these women's lives by analysing women's gains alongside their vulnerabilities; highlighting their struggles in the context of displacement and precariousness. She asks how do these women resist certain forms of impositions and inequalities and how did their individual struggles contribute to the formation of social spaces, as new sites of ‘being’?Development (2006) 49, 134–136. doi:10.1057/palgrave.development.1100217
