The MDGs in a World of Multiplying Inequalities and Differentiating Complexities
Shobha Raghuram
Development, 2008, vol. 51, issue 2, 241-244
Abstract:
Shobha Raghuram (independent researcher and until recently director of an international NGO working in India) responds to the three articles by Jan Vandemoortele (a Beligum national working at the UN), Jos J. van Gennip (a senator from the Netherlands), and Ana Agostino (a civil society activist and researcher living and working in Uruguay). Raghuram sees Vandemoortele as producing an important and balanced account of the MDGs, whereas Agostino and van Gennip provide a broader macro analysis of their visions of development. Agostino presents a highly critical account, which raises some foundational issues about development itself. Van Gennip gives a more positive appreciation of the efforts of development institutions. Reflecting on these articles, Raghuram looks at what the MDG process indicates for today's development path. Development (2008) 51, 241–244. doi:10.1057/dev.2008.10
