Another World is Possible: Reflections on the World Social Forum 2011, Dakar

Abstract: From 6–9 February 2011, the World Social Forum (WSF) took place in Dakar, Senegal, at one of the oldest and most progressive universities in Africa – The Cheikh Anta Diop University. The Forum is a self-organized open space venue dedicated to discussion, proposals for alternatives to globalization and neo-liberal policies by activists working towards a better world who abide by the Charter of Principles set out by the International Council (IC; www.worldsocialforum.org}) and believe in ‘Another World is Possible’. As a counter action to the annual World Economic Forum held in Davos, Switzerland, the WSF was first held in 2001 in Porto Alegre, Brazil. In the eleven years since, many thousands of peopl e have attended hundreds of world, polycentric and national forums. In Dakar, Senegal, thousands of people attended from 130 countries. In the following medley of articles members of the IC reflect on what they learnt from the experience of Dakar.
