You Will Not Die When Your Animals are Shining: ‘Aid-waiting’ in Turkana

Abstract: Eugenie Reidy shares the experience of a Turkana family in Northern Turkana. She traces the history of aid and its impact on their lives. Etukoit and her husband Nachukuli are critical of the relief on which they depend. Previously nomadic pastoralists, they came to towns to register for relief and then stayed to continue getting it. They call it ‘aid-waiting’, and it sustains them from one week to the next, but they explain that it is not really living. Guided by their explanations and anxieties, she proposes that humanitarian assistance for such families needs to strengthen a family's herd as well as its health, and support pastoralism as the foundation of resilience.
