Reducing Human Exclusion for Structural Transformation: The African Social Development Index

Abstract: Despite two decades of unprecedented economic growth, Africa has yet to see its economic gains translated into positive social outcomes. By adopting a life-cycle approach, this article presents a new tool, the African Social Development Index (ASDI), which aims at measuring the levels and patterns of human exclusion in six key dimensions of well-being, for different groups of population. The results of the ASDI will be instrumental in mapping and assessing the impact of social policies in reducing human exclusion, in line with Africa’s aspirations of achieving an inclusive and sustainable development, and ‘leaving no one behind’.
