Emancipatory Democracy and Political Struggles in Post-Decentralization Eastern Indonesia

Abstract: Engaging with contemporary social–political struggles in Manggarai Raya, NTT Province, Eastern Indonesia, this article contributes to rethinking democracy by (1) exposing the paradox of liberal democracy in the post-authoritarian and decentralization context, and (2) analyzing emancipatory practices by socio-political movements to meaningfully articulate a rule of, by, and for the people, in contrast to the rule by the elected elites in a neo-liberal governmentality. On the basis of the visions and actions of those progressive actors, this article theorizes emancipatory democracy with key elements of mutual care and solidarity (baku peduli), direct participation, and public deliberation.
