Abstract: Abstract Microfinance has been touted as a possible pathway out of poverty for individuals in many poor communities. However, its track record remains spotty and there is a need to rethink what space microfinance efforts occupy within the broader structural transformation context. In this regard, microfinance should not become a pretext or alibi for the state to abdicate its core functions and responsibilities to its citizens.
