Re-Building the World: The Structural Adjustment Through Mega-Infrastructures in the Era of Financialization

Antonio Tricarico () and Xavier Sol ()

Development, 2016, vol. 59, issue 1, 53-58

Abstract: Abstract This article describes the global investment consensus for large infrastructure under construction at international level. Via a new wave of mega projects and their related revenue streams, infrastructure is being turned into an asset class. This growing agenda, which will shape future trade and investment patters globally, represents a new phase of globalization, financialization and structural adjustment. The authors identify risks and challenges linked to this new agenda, from detrimental climate impacts to debt burden for emerging economies.
