Abstract:
The distribution of household income 1977 to 2006/07This article describes how the distributionof household income in the UK haschanged over the last 30 years. It drawsmainly on data published each year inthe Offi ce for National Statistics’ (ONS)annual analysis ‘The effects of taxes andbenefi ts on household income’ whichis also known as the Redistribution ofIncome (ROI) analysis. Whereas theannual ROI article focuses primarily onthe latest year’s data, this article providesa more detailed analysis of the wayin which the income distribution haschanged over time. A companion article‘The redistribution of household income1977 to 2006/07’ focuses on changesin the way that the tax and benefi tsystems redistributed income, and howthis affected the income distribution. Thissecond article is available on the ONSwebsite at: www.statistics.gov.uk/cci/article.asp?id=2083 and will be appearingin the January 2009 edition of Economic& Labour Market Review
