Abstract:
This article briefly considers a few of thechanges in the labour market in the last20 years and how these adjustmentsrelate to the economy in the UK. Itacknowledges that, during 2008, thetiming of movements in output indicatorsand labour market statistics differed. Toexplore this, the economic backgroundto 2008 is discussed, by presentingaggregate economic indicators for aselection of international trade partnersand looking at other statistics producedby the Office for National Statistics. Finally, the developments in commodityprices and government policy over the lastyear are recognised.
