Abstract: Employment occurs when a contract isin place between an employer and anemployee. Over the last 30 years, manychanges have occurred in employmentpatterns within the UK. These include thechanging structure of the population,growth in women working, growthin service industries and decline inmanufacturing industries and changingemployee and consumer demands.This article presents employment levelsand rates, using Labour Force Surveydata. It compares the employment rateof people by sex, age, ethnicity, disability,county of birth and qualifications held. Italso considers the employment patterns inthe public sector.
