Abstract: SummaryThere is a clear requirement in the UK, and internationally, to measure the progress towards a ‘green’ economy, and within this to understand the contribution of the environmental goods and services sector to the economy and the potential for growth. As stated in the UK Environmental Accounts Strategy published in June 2010, ONS is conducting a study to assess the feasibility of measuring this sector in line with the definitional framework proposed by Eurostat. This article presents the framework and outlines a number of interesting statistical challenges to be examined as part of the study, the results of which will be published in summer 2011.
