An Overview of UNCTAD's Least Developed Countries Report 2010: Towards a New International Development Architecture for LDCs

Abstract: This article summarizes the main messages of UNCTAD's Least Developed Countries Report 2010. In the wake of global financial and economic crisis, the Report calls for a development paradigm shift and the creation of a New International Development Architecture (NIDA) for the poorest and most vulnerable countries in the world. NIDA would be embodied in new forms of development cooperation in the areas of finance, trade, commodities, technology and climate change adaptation and mitigation. It would include reforms in the global economic regimes that directly affect development and poverty reduction in the LDCs as well as a new generation of LDC-specific international support mechanisms and enhanced South-South development cooperation.
