Abstract: L’Afrique du Sud a récemment rejoint le club des ‘BRICS’. Cette association officielle de l’Afrique du Sud avec les puissants membres initiaux du groupe suggère que ce pays a une certaine influence internationale. Néanmoins, même si l’Afrique du Sud mène une politique étrangère active, par exemple en tant qu’organisateur régional à travers le NEPAD notamment, et en tant que leader thématique se consacrant aux questions de développement, la direction normative caractérisant l’engagement international sud africain est peu claire et souvent contradictoire. Cet article montre que l’Afrique du Sud adhère à des principes libéraux mais s’en écarte lorsqu’elle s’engage dans la politique globale de développement. Le rôle de puissance moyenne joué par l’Afrique du Sud ainsi que sa politique intérieure sont identifiés comme exerçant une pression sur les aspects libéraux de sa politique étrangère.
