Abstract:
At the Third Annual Conference of the International Association of Insurance Supervisors (IAIS) held in Paris, in October 1996, one of the items of the Conference was a Panel Session on reinsurance and supervision. Chairing this session, the Verzekeringskamer (the Dutch Insurance Supervisory Authority) focused on how reinsurance supervision is practised in a number of IAIS countries. Moreover, these countries were invited to give their opinion about the future supervision on reinsurance. At the end of the Panel Session, the Verzekeringskamer invited all members of the IAIS to fill in a questionnaire on this subject in due course. At the Fourth Annual Conference, in Sydney Australia, in September 1997, the results of a research project were made public. This article is a slightly adapted version of the paper that was presented in Sydney. The main results indicate that the IAIS members expect a somewhat stricter supervision of reinsurers than at present. The existing differences in supervisory approach between the countries will narrow, but will not disappear altogether.
