Abstract:
The character of import sourcing for manufacturing has changed beyond the reach of current explanatory schemes. This study knits several evolving trends in the area of import sourcing into a theoretical framework in order to facilitate research in this under-researched topic and expose to practitioners the increasing strategic value of import sourcing. The suggested framework views the extent of import sourcing in a firm as a function of three factors: cost factor, strategy factor and the international trade infrastructure (ITI) factor. In the past decade, changes in ITI have facilitated international trade through developments in communication, transportation and other structural elements of international trade. The view of import sourcing presented here suggests a Principle of Import Sourcing Dynamics, which explains the progressively increasing strategic value of import sourcing to individual firms. Implications of the principle for practice and research are discussed.© 1993 JIBS. Journal of International Business Studies (1993) 24, 671–691
