Abstract: Most employees are under- or overpaid relative to their country's level of wealth. This 58-nation study makes a case for more temperate – less cold or hot – climate as a root of a more mastery-oriented culture, which in turn is associated with wealth-referenced overpayment. Overpayment is larger in poorer countries that also have a more temperate climate, a more mastery-oriented culture, or both. Supplementary examination of 25 rival predictors corroborated the conclusions. Journal of International Business Studies (2003) 34, 40–52. doi:10.1057/palgrave.jibs.8400007
