Digital economy and coal consumption in emerging Asian economies

Abstract: Abstract This paper examines the relationship between digital economic indicators and coal consumption in 15 Asian emerging countries from 2005 to 2021 using the CS-ARDL approach. The findings indicate that e-banking payments significantly drive coal consumption, while high-tech imports negatively correlate with it, suggesting enhanced productivity and energy efficiency. In contrast, ICT expenditure is positively associated with coal consumption due to its energy-intensive nature. The inflation rate inversely affects coal consumption, indicating economic instability, while GDP growth is positively related, fueled by increased economic activity and urbanization. The study recommends prioritizing initiatives to boost high-tech imports and address the positive links between e-banking payments and ICT expenditure. Additionally, encouraging investments in renewable energy sources and clean technology can promote sustainable economic growth and reduce coal dependence.
